Tutoring over the Internet

I have found that tutoring over the Internet can be a very useful way to supplement or even replace in-person tutoring because the technology has become so good, and it is free. However there are two requirements:

  • You must have a high speed Internet connection, either a DSL or cable modem
  • Your computer must have a microphone and speaker (or a headset)

That's all there is to it. On the scheduled date and time, we connect over the Internet. Once connected, we can:

  • Hear what each other is saying
  • Share an electronic whiteboard on our computer screens that permits each of us to see what the other person is writing
book

To get free sound over the Internet, I use Skype software because it runs on Windows and Mac computers. This enables you to talk to anybody connected to the Internet for free! It also supports videoconferencing, but I do not use that feature for tutoring.

To get a free white board over the Internet, I use Vyew software because it runs in any browser on any computer. This enables you to share a whiteboard with anybody connected to the Internet for free! It also supports many other features that I do not typically use for tutoring.
